Overview
UCESCO Africa is a registered nonprofit empowering marginalized communities across Kenya and Uganda through healthcare, education, women's empowerment, youth development, and food security — with supporters and partners reaching all the way to the United States.
As the organization grew, so did its website — and the WordPress site it ran on couldn't keep up. We rebuilt the entire platform from the ground up as a fully custom Next.js application, and integrated secure online card donations so the organization could raise funds directly through its own site.
The Challenge
UCESCO's site had started small and grown organically on WordPress. Over time it became chaotic — layers of plugins, page builders, and patched-on sections that made the site slow, hard to maintain, and inconsistent from page to page.
The organization had simply outgrown what the WordPress setup could do. Every new program, campaign, or content type pushed against the platform's ceiling, and routine changes risked breaking something elsewhere. For an NGO that depends on its website to tell its story and raise funds, that fragility was a real liability.
A Full Custom Build
Rather than patch the WordPress site again, we rebuilt UCESCO from scratch as a fully custom platform on Next.js. That gave us full control over structure, performance, and presentation — no plugin bloat, no template constraints, and a consistent design system across every page.
We structured the platform around the way the organization actually works: distinct programs, projects, and impact stories, clear paths to get involved, and content that's straightforward to keep current. Server-rendered pages keep it fast for supporters browsing from anywhere in the world, and the custom foundation means new programs and campaigns can be added without fighting the system.
Online Card Donations
A nonprofit's website has to do more than inform — it has to convert visitors into supporters. We integrated a secure card payment gateway (Mastercard) directly into the platform, so donors can give by card online without being handed off to a disconnected, unfamiliar checkout.
Bringing donations onto UCESCO's own platform makes giving a natural part of the experience, supporting the organization's programs and child sponsorship work directly from the pages that tell those stories.
The Results
UCESCO now runs on a fast, fully custom platform instead of an overgrown WordPress install. Pages are consistent, the site is far easier to maintain, and the organization is no longer boxed in by a template's limits as it continues to grow.
Supporters can give online by card directly on the site, turning the platform into a real fundraising tool rather than just a brochure.
Looking Ahead
With a modern Next.js foundation in place, UCESCO can keep expanding its programs, campaigns, and impact storytelling — and build on the payment integration to deepen how it engages and grows its community of supporters.
